Boyndie Wind Farm Co-op purchased a stake in former World War II airfield from owners Falck Renewables Wind Limited in 2006 after raising £750.000! In February 2010 the members of the co-op were given the opportunity to purchase a further stake in the additional turbine which is now constructed and fully operational. The co-op currently has 722 members each with a shareholding ranging from £250 - £20,000 (the maximum holding in the co-op). All members receive annual interest on their shares in the co-op. Irrespective of shareholding each member has one vote in decisions affecting the co-op.
The wind farm has 8 turbines and when it’s operating fully it generates 16.30 MW of electricity. That is enough clean, green energy to supply around 9,100 homes – roughly equal to all the homes in Banff, Whitehills, Portsoy and all the nearby rural areas.
The Boyndie Wind Farm Co-op is part of a family of co-ops being developed by Energy4All Ltd in partnership with Falck Renewables Wind Limited.
